A Place of Comfort: Creating a City Corner for Our Furry Babies
“Healing” is often regarded as a product of time, and space also has the capacity and potential to trigger the healing process.
In the center of Hsinchu City, a nearly hundred-ping space is quietly standing on the street—a healing realm created for animals.
"Lumos Animal Hospital" is not merely a pet clinic but a designed space that fuses gentleness with rationality, professionalism with emotion. During the planning process, the design team has been working with the professional medical team in the clinic to develop a safe and secure environment for the furry babies and their owners with considerate and empathetic care.
The hospital is divided into two floors: the first floor is a dedicated treatment area for dogs, while the second floor is a cat sanctuary and surgical suite. This zoning not only takes into account the different social needs and emotional sensitivities between dogs and cats but also shows respect and consideration for their internal rhythms.
At the same time, when people and animals in need enter this space, there are no nervous barks and meows in their ears, but relaxed smiles of the owners and their furry babies, as well as friendly medical staff here, with professional yet warm dialogues.
Collaboration of Rationality and Expertise: Detailed Arrangements in the Space
The interior design of a pet clinic is by no means comparable to that of an ordinary residential or commercial space. In addition to considering the reception and smooth traffic flow, the interior design of a pet clinic must accommodate the placement and usage scenarios of professional medical equipment. For example, the X-ray room on the second floor was built with the assistance of an expert experienced in radiation safety construction to create a lead-lined room, ensuring the safety of both medical staff and animals. These seemingly cold hardware designs are in fact the most solid and critical elements of the overall space.
Everything from treatment rooms to surgical areas embodies the concept of "shared use by humans and animals", from the width of each door to the texture of each material, all undergoing delicate consideration. Even the height and material of chairs in the waiting area were selected with designs suitable for owners and their pets to rest together, so waiting is no longer a kind of anxiety, but a time of quiet companionship.
The Language of Light and Atmosphere: The Power of Gentle Design
Space is a silent language. In this animal hospital, designers abandoned overly compact or cold styles, opting instead for openness and light as the main elements. Large glass panels at the entrance introduce natural light, complemented by gentle lighting arrangements, presenting an unintentionally bright and comfortable atmosphere. This ambiance is essential for animals—their perception of the environment is far more sensitive than that of humans, and intense sound or light can easily cause them great stress.
For the floor tiles, materials with non-slip properties and warm textures were specifically chosen so that even elderly or mobility-impaired pets can walk comfortably. The height and color of the ceiling visually create a more spacious, breathable feeling. All these elements seem to convey the same message: this is a place of comfort, please feel free to stay here.
Balance Between Beauty and Practicality: Gentle Design is a Responsibility
"Design" in this case is not a pursuit of formal aesthetics but assumes the responsibility of healing and care. A truly warm space should not only serve humans but also embrace those living beings that cannot speak yet possess emotions nonetheless. In this animal hospital located in the heart of the city, we transform the potential stress of medical spaces into a gentle, trustworthy presence through the arrangement of materials, light, circulation, and zoning.
Gentle design is a responsibility. We hope to allow every user, whether human or animal, to deeply feel that thoughtfulness.
